US jobs data give Asian markets Christmas boost

HONG KONG: Asian stock markets rose on Friday as investors welcomed better-than-expected jobs data from the United States that suggest the economic recovery there is gaining traction.

But while the final trading day before the Christmas break was positive there were still lingering concerns over the European debt crisis, which has roiled markets for most of the year.

Hong Kong rose 1.06 percent, Sydney gained 1.04 percent, Seoul was 1.14 percent higher and Shanghai added 0.53 percent.

Tokyo and Wellington were closed for a public holiday.

On oil markets New York's main contract, light sweet crude for delivery in February, gained seven cents to $99.60 a barrel and Brent North Sea crude for February delivery lost 11 cents to $107.78.

Gold was trading at $1,613.10 an ounce at 0210 GMT, against $1,614.60 an ounce late Thursday.
