zerg rush

About

Zerg Rush is an online gaming term used to describe an overwhelming scale of attack carried out by one player against another in real time strategy (RTS) games. The term originates from the popular RTS game Starcraft, in which the “Zerg” race is notoriously known for its ability to mass-produce offensive units within a short time frame, thus allowing the player to overpower the opponent by sheer number.

Origin

Similar to You must construct additional pylons! and In Ur Base, Zerg Rush came from StarCraft, a military science real time strategy game originally released on March 31st, 1998. In the game, each player can choose to play as one of the three species: Terran (humans), Protoss (humanoids) or Zerg (insectoids).

Terminology

In real tim strategy genre, “rush” is a type of fast-attack strategy that involves mass mobilizing one or a combination of different unit types as rapidly as possible in order to overrun the opponent’s base and inflict most serious damage. This strategy is especially conducive to StarCraft’s Zerg players[1], whose average unit build time is significantly shorter in comparison to the other two species. As a result, it became common for players to set “no rush in x minutes” rules in online matches.

The first infantry units of Zergs are Zerglings. They are small and inexpensive Zerg units which can be produced quickly. A Zergling rush is the tactic of attacking an opponent with 6 or more Zergling units as early as permissible. The Zerg race is gladly favored concerning speed and power in the earliest moments of the game and the “Zerg Rush” strategy caught on really quick in wide scale, when gamers realized that one decisive Zergling attack could finalize a game in less than 5 minutes.

Online Usage

The meme in itself apparently stems from a multiplayer match involving Koreans, who represent a significant portion of Starcraft’s international fanbase. During the match, one of the Korean players launched an early Zergling rush attack against an opponent player, who exclaimed “OMG ZERG RUSH.” In response, the Zerg player replied “KEKEKE,” a popular Korean phrase that is comparable to “lolololol” in English. This conversation has been frequently cited as the origin, however, no visual evidence has been found to support the anecdote.

While the romanized Korean expression “KEKEKE” (ㅋㅋㅋ) usually conveys a mischievous snicker, it also perfectly embodied the sound of Zerglings (Zerg’s basic infantry unit) in attack mode. Due to the prevalence of Korean players who are extremely skilled in this tactic and lack of Korean input support in multiplayer until February 2005, “KEKEKE” quickly became associated with Zerg rush among English-speaking players.

Spread

On YTMND, the earliest instance of “Zerg Rush”[2] reference was created by thecombatwombat on May 17th, 2004. Although the site remained in latency with less than 10,000 total views, another site[3] was created by CheezWhizWario a month later, which became the viral instance of the “Zerg Rush” series on YTMND. It eventually led to more than 40 YTMND variations[4] based on similar themes, the most popular instance being LOLZergRush[5] by GoldBean, dating from 2006 with more than 50,000 views.

The first definition of “Zerg Rush” was registered via Urban Dictionary[6] on December 25th, 2004. The encyclopedic resource site Encyclopedia Dramatica[7] also offers other alternative situations in which “Zerg Rush” can be used:

- In a debate, if someone throws a pile of links or facts around, reply with “OMG ZERG RUSH!!!oneoneone”
- A horde of Kids leaving school grounds can also be considered a Zerg Rush [etc…]

Google Easter Egg

On April 27th, 2012, Google enabled an Easter egg[8] for the search query “zerg rush”, which would launch a playable game with small “o” characters that destroy search results if they are not clicked with the mouse pointer.

IMTA Alum Seann William Scott in American Reunion!

Please enjoy this very special Press Release from IMTA:

Star revels in the joy of returning to his breakout role

IMTA Press Release

American Reunion opened nationwide Friday, April 6

“[My fiancé Lindsay] hadn’t seen American Pie, thank god. Otherwise, I probably wouldn’t be engaged.” – Seann William Scott

IMTA alum Seann William Scott (LA 95) is okay with the fact that he will always be known as the sex- starved Steve Stifler in the American Pie film franchise for a couple of reasons: audiences love the character, and Scott loves playing Stifler. “I know when I decided to do American Pie Reunion, it was like, ‘Ok, let’s come to terms with the fact that I’m going to be forever known as this guy.’ You have to embrace it,” said Scott. “It's so much more fun now as well, because my sense of humor has changed I'm weirder and a little bit more bold. What a fantastic character, to see this guy in his 30s, doing things that other 30-year-olds really don't want to see, but maybe they want to do.”

In American Reunion, the fourth installment in the hugely successful American Pie series that launched his career, Scott plays an older but none-the-wiser Stifler. “Stifler's the person who hasn't changed, but the world around him has changed. He can’t deal with it; he's still living in the high school world. That is definitely fun to play,” Scott explained. “I don’t know why people like the character so much, at least in the first two films. Maybe it’s because he gets to say the things that we want to say, but if we do say them, we get into trouble.”

With all of the original American Pie cast members returning to their roles, American Reunion has lost none of the raunchy humor and appeal that made the first three films into huge hits. “The amazing thing was that at the table read when we all got together and read the script for the first time, I hadn’t seen a lot of people for 10 years, and I could tell that everybody was in such a good place,” said Scott. “All the characteristics that we loved in each other were all there, but more grown up. It made the experience even more fun because there was just more substance to the conversations we were having.”

Clearly Scott, who was also an Executive Producer on the film, had a great time making Reunion. “I like this movie so much, and I hope we have that situation where this movie is well-received and people dig it as much as we like it. And then, who knows? I’m at a point now, as much as there are all sorts of roles I want to do, having this much fun with these guys means more to me now, as an actor, and more than anything. I’d be happy to do this, as long as it lasts, because I have so much fun.”

IMTA Alum Moises Arias in We The Party!

Please enjoy this very special Press Release from IMTA:

Young star moves on, grows up

We the Party opened nationwide Friday, April 6

Life has certainly not been slow for IMTA alum Moises Arias (LA05) since signing on as Rico in “Hannah Montana,” the character that made him a breakout Disney star. While appearing on television in guest- starring roles such that of Matt, Sue Heck’s boyfriend in the ABC hit “The Middle,” Arias has also stepped into feature films with roles in such films as Nacho Libre, The Perfect Game and Hannah Montana: The Movie. He has voiced characters in animated features such as Astro Boy and The Secret World of Arrietty. And as his Hollywood star continues to rise, Arias is set to take the next big step with a set of dissimilar roles in a group of new films that truly mark him as one young actor to watch.

First up is We the Party, a very timely and revealing comedy about contemporary youth culture playing on the latest trends in music, dance and fashion. Set in an ethnically diverse Los Angeles high school, the film focuses on five friends as they deal with romance, money, prom, college, sex, bullies, Facebook, fitting in, standing out, and finding themselves. We the Party comes to theatres April 6th and stars ‒ in addition to Arias ‒ Salli Richardson-Whitfield, Mario Van Peebles, Mandela Van Peebles, Simone Battle, Snoop Dogg and YG, among others.

Scheduled for an opening sometime in early summer is noobz, a comedy about a gamer clan made up of three luckless, aging gamers and an asthmatic adolescent (Arias) who embark on a road trip to Los Angeles to win the Gamecon “Gears of War” Championship. Jason Mewes, Blake Freeman and Matt Shively also star. The title noobz is used to describe newbies...or just really awful video gamers.

Arias is currently filming Ender’s Game in New Orleans, a big screen adaptation of the hugely popular 1985 book by Orson Scott Card, in which 70 years after a horrific alien war, an unusually gifted child is sent to an advanced military school in space to prepare for a future invasion. The film, already being described as possibly the next Twilight or Hunger Games, also stars Asa Butterfield, Hailee Steinfeld, Abigail Breslin and Harrison Ford. Ender’s Game is set for release March 15, 2013.

Arias is also currently working on recording his scenes for the role of Antonio is Despicable Me 2, the sequel to the award-winning animated hit, Despicable Me. Steve Carell, Miranda Cosgrove and much of the original cast return to their roles, with Al Pacino tapped to play the yet-to-be-named villain. Despicable Me 2 is slated for a July 13, 2013 opening.
